Bharatnatyam Queen Padmashri Geeta Chandran Shines Bright at NCPA’s Nakshatra Dance Festival

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) came alive with a momentous performance by the legendary Bharatnatyam dancer, Padmashri Geeta Chandran. Titled ‘Pravahati’ the event marked the doyen’s 50th year in her illustrious dance career. Founder of Natya Vriksha, a renowned cultural organisation, Chandran has dedicated her life to exploring the nuances of Bharatnatyam, both as a performer and a teacher. Despite being a Sunday, the performance was met with a thunderous response from Mumbaikars. Chandran's ‘Pravahati’, performed as a part of NCPA’s Nakshtra’s Dance Festival, unfolded through four captivating pieces: ‘Mallari,’ a tribute to Lord Shiva; ‘Ritusamhara,’ a portrayal of the monsoon season; ‘Vahati,’ a reinterpretation of a classic Krishna bhajan; and ‘Tillana’, a celebratory finale. Each piece offered a unique glimpse into Chandran's artistic vision.
